The Setup
viafrank: And these computers? As much as I love fiddle-faddling with the damn things, I mostly just want to forget I have one and get on with saying stuff and making things. I realized that I valued freedom more than power, flexibility more than blazing speed. I want the choice of being able to be mobile, and to carry around my whole setup with me at all times without much inconvenience....

Mythbusting: Why Firefox 4 won’t score 100 on... →
kirindave: Fair enough. It’s not like Standards Compliance is the real issue scaring people away from Firefox these days. It’s the bloat, slowness and stability issues.

The Creative Disconnect
Today I was looking through my past work from over the years, and just kept noticing that something wasn’t quite right. There was a recurring theme throughout the work that just wasn’t me. The work was always a few notches lower in quality than what I know I’m capable of. Then it hit me. The creative disconnect. Clients really like to play ping-pong. A designer submits a design...

iA Writer for iPad
In all honesty, when I tried this app, I was not expecting it to be as serious of an alternative to desktop writing as it turned out to be. Merlin Mann has even made fun of some of its features, such as the focus mode, which fades out all but the three lines of text you are currently working on. However, after trying it out, I cannot recommend it enough. It adheres to the whole minimalist...

The 960 Grid System Made Easy →
chrisbowler: More on the design front again, this post really spelled out how beneficial and easy to use 960gs from Nathan Smith is. Another great tutorial. A terrific overview of the 960 grid system, how to use it, and the many merits of grids in general.

When Less Means Everything
Having less changed my life this week. I really had not planned this out. But the way things worked out, if it were not for some minimalist living and thinking, my wife and I might just be living on the other side of the country right now. You see, a couple of weeks ago my wife and I were in California (we’re from upstate New York), when we suddenly had a narrow window of opportunity open...

The Recording Industry vs. Reality: Some Ideas
There has been no shortage of news stories regarding the music industry and it’s ever less-creative ways. They’ve been suing 12 year olds and single mothers, shutting down websites, and swooning legislators into writing absurd laws in their favor. They have truly forgotten who they are.  They’ve forgotten their purpose. At its core, the music industry has a single purpose — to provide the...

Social Media and Reality
If you listen to the hype on the web these days, you’d think that everyone and their mother lived on Twitter, Facebook, and other social media sites. Marketers everywhere are pimping their latest eBooks and blog articles with titles like, “Top 10 Reasons Why Your Company Needs Twitter,” or “5 Ways to Utilize Facebook in Your Next Marketing Campaign.” The real question is, “Who is really...

Minimalism & Reality
Vivek Haldar makes an interesting counterpoint to the raving minimalists out there in his article entitled “Minimalism is not a viable intellectual strategy.” I think it’s refreshing to see someone intelligent actually explore the other side of the spectrum for once. However, I do think he places a bit too much weight on opinion. Minimalist living is often epitomized as the...

Marco.org: There really isn't much of a "tablet"... →
marco: There’s an iPad market, and the iPad could be classified as a tablet, from a hardware-centric viewpoint. But the market for non-iPad tablets is about as big today as it was before the iPad, which isn’t nothing, but it’s close enough to nothing that Apple doesn’t need to worry about it. How many… Basically, people don’t want “a Tablet Computing Product”, they...

WatchWatch
I was using a terrific app today (wunderlist) on my Mac and iPad, and wondering how they managed to make an app so consistent across platforms. It turns out this gorgeous, fully native Mac and iOS app was built using Appcelerator Titanium.
